Located in Eastern Sioux Falls, Copper Pass Apartments is a 30-unit apartment building designed and constructed to achieve Passive House certification, an international certification system for highly efficient building design. This project came about thanks to an initiative put out by Governor Dennis Daugaard for South Dakota Housing Development Authority to utilizing funding for the first affordable multi-family housing project to achieve Passive House certification in the state. Design principles implemented to achieve the Passive House certification are:

• Continuous insulation and minimal thermal bridging
• Air-tight construction
• High-performance windows
• Balanced ventilation
• Minimal mechanical systems
